Check engine light is on — what now?
The check engine light is your car's computer telling you it detected a problem. Sometimes it's minor like a loose fuel cap, sometimes it needs quick attention.
Steady or flashing?
- Steady: a fault needs checking soon, but you can usually drive gently to a workshop.
- Flashing: usually a severe misfire that can damage the catalytic converter. Slow down and stop when safe.
- With a red temperature or oil light: stop immediately and turn off the engine.
Most common causes
- Loose or damaged fuel cap (P0442 / P0455).
- Oxygen sensor or catalytic converter (P0420).
- Weak spark plugs or ignition coils (P0300–P0304).
- Vacuum leak or dirty MAF sensor (P0171).
What to do now
- Check the fuel cap and tighten until it clicks.
- Read the code with an OBD scanner instead of guessing.
- Don't clear the code without fixing the cause — it will come back.
